Cannock Chase Council will roll out the new service from December 1 and users need to register on the PayByPhone website.

Once people have registered, when they visit any of the council's car parks, they will be asked to follow the instructions on the signs next to the pay and display machines to pay for parking using their phone.

The service is part of a number of improvements which are being made to council-owned car parks across the districts.

Councillor Josh Newbury, portfolio leader for environment and climate change said “We want to make car parking as convenient as possible, so these improvements will really help those people who use our car parks.

"This was one of the first suggestions I made when I became a councillor in May of last year, so I am very happy to see the work being carried out.

"Using this service and our replacement machines will mean you can pay for parking however you wish: by cash, card, contactless or by with PayByPhone.

“Download the new smart cashless app – PayByPhone and pay for your parking more easily.

"Using the app will avoid tickets and will even remind you when it is time to go.

"In addition to this, if you are running late returning to your car or want to stay for longer, you can extend your ticket at the touch of a button, provided you have not exceeded the maximum stay in a car park."
