Stafford M6 footbridge will not be rebuilt
A footbridge which ran over the M6 near Stafford will not be rebuilt, due to a lack of usage.
Transport bosses have decided against replacing Burton Bank bridge over the M6 between Junctions 13 and 15 following a consultation with residents in the area. They said cash will instead be invested into improving the local area.
The bridge was brought down as part of long-running works to create a smart motorway which have seen the speed limit cut.
Around 1,500 local households were contacted by Highways England and a public meeting held to discuss options following the demolition of the bridge. It said the vast majority of residents to send letters in on their views favoured not rebuilding it.
Experts said replacing the bridge was not deemed value for money due to the low numbers of people who used it.
Cash will now be spent in other areas, with proposals favoured by residents including lighting the Burton Manor Road underpass and installing pedestrian crossings close to Burton Manor Primary School. Parking problems at the nearby Burton Square area were also highlighted, with the local library, shops and churches all in use at busy periods.
Investment
Highways England smart motorways project sponsor Peter Smith said: “We had to be sure that replacing the footbridge represented the best value for money for the public purse, particularly given the alternative footpaths available and the low numbers of people that previously used it.
“To that end, we engaged extensively with the local community and found the majority supported the closure of the bridge, largely due to concerns over anti-social behaviour.
“We can now explore investment instead in some of the projects that have been suggested, which could benefit schoolchildren, pedestrians, cyclists and the community as a whole.”
County and borough councillor Carolyn Trowbridge said: “I am pleased to see the residents’ suggestions of road safety measures near Burton Manor Primary School and improved parking in the Burton Manor area are being considered. This popular area, with a wide variety of excellent shops, is a hub of activity for many locals. Extra parking will make a real difference for shoppers and shop owners alike.
“Any improved crossing facilities would not only be great for schoolchildren but for all locals, the school patrol crossing officers do an excellent job but extra safety for them and anyone crossing has to be a bonus.”
