Overturned lorry closes busy road in West Bromwich near M5
A lorry has overturned on a busy road in West Bromwich near the M5 sparking delays for motorists.
The driver, a man, was taken to hospital with injuries not thought to be serious.
The crash blocked the A41 Expressway today - near to J1 of the M5 - causing congestion for traffic.
West Midlands Ambulance Service sent one ambulance and a paramedic officer to the junction of A41 and Birmingham Road after being alerted at 9.24am.
An ambulance spokesman said: "On arrival we discovered one patient, a man, who was the driver of the lorry.
"He had to be extricated through the roof of the lorry with assistance from the fire service.
"He was then treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken to Sandwell Hospital for further assessment."
West Midlands Fire Service said the driver had removed himself from the vehicle prior to firefighters arriving.
A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "The male driver of the lorry removed himself from the vehicle prior to the crews’ arrival and was assessed at the scene by the ambulance service.
"Thorough checks of the vehicle were made to ensure there were no more casualties and after securing the scene, crews left the incident in the hands of the police."
West Midlands Police warned motorists the road was likely to be closed for several hours.
WMP Traffic tweeted: "For road users wishing to use A41 (The Expressway) from Junction 1 of the M5, we have the road closed for an overturned lorry. Expect closures & delays for several hours."
