Traffic was halted between Junctions 2 and 3 at about 3am while police helped the person and got them off the bridge.

Then about two hours later officers were called to another bridge between Junction 0 and 1, where another person was talked down while the traffic below was secured.

Central Motorway Police Group tweeted at 3am saying: "Traffic is held on the M5 both north and south bound carriageways J2-J3. This is due to a person in distress on a bridge.

"If you are trapped in the traffic please bare with us we are working with Highways to get you out of the closure. Everyone else please avoid area."

Then later: "The person has safely been negotiated off the bridge and will receive help and support. Both carriageways on the M5 have been reopened.

"Thank you to the motorist trapped in the closure for their understanding and patience."

Then at 5.40am they tweeted again saying: "Second vulnerable person on a bridge on the M5 this time J0 to J1.

"Excellent work by Response WMP who quickly talked the person down whilst we secured the traffic below. The person now received help and support."
