The Met Office warned downpours would continue all through the day as it announced a yellow weather warning for rain.

Flood barriers have been installed in Bewdley due to rising water levels on the River Severn, with an alert urging people to avoid the area.

And drivers were left in misery after Gailey Island, which links the A449 Stafford Road and the A5, was covered with low-lying water – forcing drivers to trudge through it.

Some motorists even had to be rescued from Sandon Road, Stafford, near the Shell Garage.

The spot, a known flooding area, saw people trying to trudge their way through – leading firefighters having to pull them out.

Ivetsey Road, in Wheaton Aston, which connects to the A5 heading toward Cannock, was flooded under a canal bridge.

A series of trains run by Transport for Wales were heavily disrupted – with some services, which pass through Wolverhampton and head to Birmingham International, cancelled.

Cannock Police had to help free the driver of a car in Stafford after they drove into a flooded section of a road.

Officers from Rugeley were also on-hand to help clear a tree between Shugborough and Wolseley.

The A448 Kidderminster Road, Bromsgrove, was also shut near Fox Lane, West Mercia Police said - though this has now been reopened.

A road in Bedworth Lane, Bedworth, near Coventry, was another victim of the harsh rainfall.

Trescott Ford, a popular place for flooding, had already reached depths of almost four foot – with South Staffordshire Police warning people to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

Fox Lane in Kidderminster, which links to the A448, was closed at the junction due to the heavy rainfall.

Drivers were also met by flooding on Heath House Lane in between Codsall and Perton.

Levels on the River Severn are expected to rise as a result of the heavy rainfall across today and tomorrow, which could lead to roads and farmland being covered.

Bosses at the Environment Agency says they are monitoring the situation, but urged people to avoid using low-lying footpaths and driving routes.

Current river levels have already hit 2.83m, with the normal range being between 0.21m to 3.30m.

And the River Severn is expected to exceed the normal range by 11pm tomorrow – with a projected river level of 4.28m.
