As the day progressed the northbound lane and two of the southbound lanes reopened, but the remaining two lanes did not reopen until gone 3pm - by which time traffic had backed up to Junction 10a for the M54.

West Midlands Ambulance Service attended the crash – sending three ambulances, a paramedic officer and an air ambulance – but there were no serious injuries.

Jamie Arrowsmith, a spokesman for the service, said: "We were called at 10.04am to reports of a multi-vehicle RTC including cars and lorries.

"We have details of three patients - a man in his 60s who was in one of the cars. He was fully conscious and out of the car when we arrived, but had back and leg injuries and was taken to Sandwell General Hospital.

"A Woman in her 50s was treated for head and foot injuries and taken to City Hospital, while a teenage woman had minor injuries and was discharged at the scene."

The crash added to what was a morning of misery on the M6 near Birmingham.

Three lanes of the Aston Expressway heading into the city were closed during rush hour leading to traffic backing up onto the M6 and long delays.

Elsewhere on the region's roads, there have been long tailbacks on the M5 after a crash between two lorries shut an entry slip road.
