No trains are running into or out of London Euston today or tomorrow as works are carried out to upgrade the station in preparation for HS2.

London Midland services which normally run between Crewe and London Euston, via Wolverhampton and Birmingham New Street, are only running as far south as Northampton.

Meanwhile Virgin customers usually travelling south via Birmingham New Street are being advised they should use Chiltern Railways between Birmingham Moor Street and London Marylebone.

London Waterloo also has half of its platforms closed this weekend.

To ease some of the impact of the work the old Eurostar platforms are being used at Waterloo for the first time since the cross-Channel train service relocated to London St Pancras in 2007.

Network Rail said it carries out major engineering work on bank holidays as up to 50 per cent fewer passengers use the railway during those periods.

On the road, Highways England has said that its traffic officers will be working around the clock to deal with incidents on motorways and A-roads.

A stretch of the M1 was today closed after eight people died and four were injured in a crash involving two lorries and a minibus travelling in the same direction.

Thames Valley Police were called shortly before 3.15am this morning to the southbound carriageway near Newport Pagnell, between junctions 15 and 14.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and are in custody.

The motorway is closed southbound between junctions 14 and 15, and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
