Smethwick road has to close due to unsafe bridge

Rabone Lane was shut between Foundry Lane and Soho Street due to an unsafe road bridge over the canal yesterday.

Council bosses carried out an urgent investigation of the damaged bridge to determine the extent of the necessary repairs.

Councillor David Hosell, cabinet member for highways and environment, said: "We realise this road closure caused disruption to businesses and road users but it is necessary to allow us to conduct investigations and ensure everyone's safety."

The emergency closure meant that diversions were in place directing traffic to Cornwall Road, Downing Street, Bridge Street North, Rolfe Street and vice-versa.
