The M5 has been closed northbound between junction two for Oldbury and junction one for West Bromwich following the crash.

Long traffic queues formed back from junction two this afternoon towards junction three at Halesowen as congestion built.

Diversions were in place advising motorists to exit at junction two at Brichley Island.

But Oldbury fire crews tweeted a picture showing gridlock around the notorious congestion hotspot due to the traffic build up.

Congestion continued into the evening rush-hour with drivers advised to avoid the area especially around Birchley island.

The section between junction two and one did reopen by 6.45pm but one lane remained closed. Resurfacing was expected to take place overnight.

Meanwhile there have been problems on the M6 after an oil spill forced the partially closure of the southbound section between junction 13 and junction 12 through Staffordshire.

One lane remains closed and resurfacing is being carried out overnight.
