Crashes lead to big M6 delays in West Midlands
A lorry driver died following a crash on the M6 - one of a series of smashes on the West Midlands motorways today.
Drivers were hit by major delays on both carriageways of the M6 in the West Midlands this morning, with more roadworks misery for drivers heading in to Wolverhampton.
Two lorries and two cars were involved in a crash near to junction 3A on the southbound carriageway for the M6 Toll and Tamworth, shortly after 9.25am.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The driver of one of the HGVs, a man, had suffered extremely serious injuries in the collision.
"Unfortunately it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene."
The M6 was also hit by another crash as two lanes were closed southbound between junction 10 at Wolverhampton and junction 9 at Wednesbury after an accident involving two lorries.
Traffic was backing up to Junction 10a for the M54.
The section was cleared by just before 9am.
A man had to be cut free from his car after it left the motorway and hit a tree.
In Wolverhampton, there were major delays on the Willenhall Road sparked by roadworks to repair a burst water pipe.
There were reports of delays of 45 minutes through roadworks at Cross Street, with queues from Portobello Island.
The pipe burst near Tesco on Willenhall Road by the Colliery Road and Cross Street four-way traffic lights.
Severn Trent staff were working to repair the pipe, and it is expected that work will be completed by the end of the week.
