Lights and police in place in attempt to stop speeding Stourbridge drivers

New speed measures have been installed on a busy road near Stourbridge in an attempt to make drivers slow down along the problem stretch.

Speed operations along the A456 near Hagley have shown more than half of vehicles are travelling above the speed limit and campaigners are desperate to make them slow down.

Two new flashing speed signs have been installed along the 30mph stretch of the Worcester Road and councillors and campaigners in Hagley are hopeful the new measures will make drivers think about their speed.

Police and local speed groups have also been carrying out speed operations around the village.

Peter Rowbottom, who lives in the village, said: "Last year excess speeding in Hagley became a priority for police to take action on and speed surveys previously carried out by local authorities had shown that at some points along the A456 over 50 per cent of vehicles were exceeding the legal limit.

"It is reassuring to see police carrying out these speed checks and hopefully the further planned operations in future will bring about long-term reductions in speeding thus making the roads in Hagley safer for everyone."

Residents have been doing their best to make get their message across over the last few months, taking to the streets in high-vis clothing and holding placards to remind drivers to watch their speed.

Problems in Hagley have been further exacerbated by work to the Kidderminster Road island off the A456 and A491, where 400 new homes are to be built.

Hagley Parish Council chairman Steve Colella said: "We have been waiting for some signs for several years. We have been without anything so it will be a welcome addition to remind people how fast they are going.

"I have stood there myself and witnessed them coming through, a good percentage of them are HGVs as well, with a lack of care, understanding and knowledge of the area it is going to end in a tragic accident.

"The problem is they come from Birmingham direction, down the hill and accelerate away. They see the dual carriageway and start to overtake to try and get ahead. If the lights are on green they are hitting their top speed as they come through the lights."
