The vehicle crashed into the central reservation between Junction 2, for Wolverhampton, and Junction 3, the Albrighton turn-off, just before 5am.

The lorry caused major damage to a 50-yard stretch of the central barrier and became stuck in the mangled metal. It also suffered mechanical failure, prolonging the rescue operation.

It was recovered from the scene after an hour but one lane on both sides of the carriageway remained closed late into the afternoon as emergency repairs to the barrier took place.

Motorists travelling in both directions faced delays of around 30 minutes.
