Elderly 'left stranded' in Stafford as buses axed

Elderly residents in Stafford say they have been left stranded after some bus services were axed.

People in St George's Road, St Leonard's Avenue and Queensville Avenue say they have to travel the half a mile to the nearest bus stop, something many of them are not physically able to do.

The buses were dropped last year, despite residents signing a petition. Councillor Chris Baron who represents the Forebridge ward, said: "Having fought for this service and won many years ago it makes me angry that no-one has listened to the residents despite the fact that they have no shops, doctors or indeed any facilities at all.

"The nearest bus stop is over half a mile away a distance which many residents cannot walk."

Councillor Baron said she had spoken with county councillors and had emailed Arriva directly, adding: "The residents have asked for two buses in the morning, to be diverted from the Lichfield Road going in to town and two return journeys morning and afternoon. Surely this is not too much to ask."

Clive Ryder, aged 75, of St Leonard's Avenue said: "We have people who cannot make it to the nearest bus stop. There are people who are spending up to £50 a week on taxis. We've got an old World War Two veteran who is basically stranded in his home.

"We need a service, even if it's only a couple of buses a day."
