But technical gremlins got the better of one of the biggest advertising hoardings in Europe when an anti-virus computer program message appeared. It blocked off part of an advert for a jewellery firm during the morning rush-hour, to the amusement of passers-by.

The billboard, near Junction 9 of the M6 for Wednesbury, has attracted controversy amid claims it could cause accidents. The message, which was asking for confirmation of an update being installed on an anti-virus program, was removed later in the morning.

The sign on the M6, which is as long as a jumbo jet, was switched on a year ago.

Residents say they were not consulted about the changes, while some claimed bright lights from the sign were shining into their homes. The structure, which sits close to Walsall FC's Banks's Stadium, was put up three years ago.

Birmingham-based technology company Elonex, which controls the billboard, could not be contacted.
