M6 night closures for works to start tomorrow
Weeks of overnight closures on the M6 will start tomorrow as part of a multi-million pound project to open up the hard shoulder.
Stretches of the motorway will be closed overnight between junction five, for Castle Bromwich and junction eight, for the M5.
Work will run until February 28, while overhead gantry equipment is installed and a new road surface is laid.
Tomorrow night and Wednesday evening a northbound section of the route will be shut between junction five and six for Aston Expressway from 10pm to 5.30am.
Then on Thursday the southbound section between junction seven for Great Barr to junction six will be shut between the same times.
On Friday the northbound stretch between junctions six and seven will be closed along with the southbound junctions between eight and seven between 10pm and 8am.
One lane will also be closed between junctions seven and eight on the northbound stretch.
On Saturday junctions six to seven, northbound will be closed along with southbound junctions seven to six, also between 10pm and 8am. The work is being carried out as part of the third phase of a £126.4m project to allow the hard shoulder to be used in times of heavy congestion.
Rob Edwards, project manager for the scheme, said the project was currently running on time but said it would be weather dependent. He added: "The scheme is currently on track to open fully by Easter but we're in the hands of the weather.
"Although the closures will be in place overnight when there is less traffic on the M6, we do advise road users to allow more time for their journeys and to follow signed diversion routes."
