Delays as cement mixer overturns on busy Hagley road
A driver has scrambled to safety after his cement mixer lorry overturned at a busy traffic island near Stourbridge today.
Delays were caused initially in the aftermath of the accident on the A456 Kidderminster Road island, in Hagley, at the junction with the A491 Stourbridge Road.
Police and paramedics arrived shortly after the crash at around 7.50am to find the driver had managed to flee from the stricken vehicle.
The cab front window was smashed with fuel leaking out onto the road as emergency fire crews arrived.
The lorry had come to a rest on a grass verge to the side of the island but it continued to partly obstruct the roadway.
Highways engineers from Worcestershire County Council were attending the scene to help with the clean up.
Sand was used to soak up the petrol from around the 20ft long vehicle but no cement escaped the tank.
One lane was closed off as recovery vehicles attended to begin the process of righting the fallen Volvo cement truck.
West Mercia Police spokeswoman Cathy Anstee said vehicles were moving freely shortly after the accident happened once officers arrived to direct traffic.
West Midlands Ambulance spokeswoman Suzie Fothergill added: "The driver had managed to get out of the lorry by the time paramedics arrived. He was treated at the scene for back pain and other minor injuries but was taken to Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley for further treatment."
