Misery for drivers as Wolverhampton roadworks end delayed by five months
Long-running roadworks which have caused misery for motorists in Wolverhampton will drag on until September – five months after they were due to finish.
Water company Severn Trent has been carrying out repair work on the Compton Bridge on the A454 Bridgnorth Road, Compton and initially set a completion date for April.
But a series of delays has meant drivers and businesses have been left frustrated by seemingly never ending maintenance at the location. Traders around the junction of Bridgnorth Road and Henwood Road have reported a drop in trade since the work began as customers avoid the traffic black spot.
To add to their frustration earlier this month fed-up businesses claimed work had ground to a halt despite temporary traffic lights still in operation.
Severn Trent said the delays were caused because repairs were 'more complex than first anticipated'. It had set a revised finish date of August but this has been put back until the end of September.
Giuseppe Albanese, who runs Pep's Plaice chip shop opposite the roadworks, said: "I've been told there's a problem with the repairs but no-one has been told what that is. In truth I'm expecting them to be here for the rest of the year so anything before that is a bonus for me. I suppose I have to just grin and bare it."
Severn Trent spokeswoman Sarah McArthur said: "Our work to protect our customers' water supply became more complex than we first anticipated.
"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may be causing and thank the local community for their ongoing patience.
"Since we started, we have visited local residents and businesses to keep them informed of our progress.
She added: "We have also met with Wolverhampton City Council and we will be working closely with them throughout the repairs. We anticipate that our work will be completed by the end of September and we'll do our best to carry out the work as quickly as we can."
