Patrick McLoughlin, the government's most senior transport minister, was speaking to the Express & Star on a visit to the county to see where £30 million will be spent electrifying the Chase Line by December 2017.

Stafford Borough Council and Lichfield District Council have formally opposed HS2 but are controlled by Mr McLoughlin's party, the Conservatives.

The councils are concerned about the effect HS2 will have on the landscape.

Mr McLoughlin said: "What we have to do is get a compensation system to treat them fairly and we will go out to consultation on that."
