Midland Metro stops running in Wolverhampton after tram breaks down
The Midland Metro had to stop running in Wolverhampton today, just a day after it re-opened following more than two and a half weeks of engineering work.
A tram broke down on Bilston Road, forcing services to stop between Priestfield and the city centre, just before 11am.
Services were running normally again half an hour later.
Contractors had spent more than a fortnight cutting back the platforms by up to 15cm (6in) to make more room for a wider fleet of new trams coming into use next year.
Current trams have been modified with a step on the outside to help passengers cope with the wider gap.
The 20-strong fleet of new trams are being built by a Spanish company.
They will be 8ft 8ins wide and therefore bigger than the old Italian built T69 trams, which are 8ft 2ins wide.
Replacement bus services had been running along the Metro line calling at 12 of the 23 stations.
