The proposed speed restriction, in Brownhills, is part of a package of proposals being drawn up for the main A452 route which is used by hundreds of motorists a day.

Improved junctions and signs are also being proposed in a bid to slow down traffic after a series of accidents.

There were 18 reported to Walsall Council along Brownhills High Street and Chester Road from December 2009-12.

Four of these were classed as serious.

The work is expected to cost £239,000 but it subject to securing funding. The council says there is no timescale for the scheme at this stage.

Transport chief councillor Tom Ansell said: "Our proposal which may take many years to take shape is to put a 20 mph speed limit along Brownhills High Street in order to help make it safer as a shopping area for pedestrians and motorists.

"We'd also look to build two raised 'table top' junctions to help slow the traffic down which would be at the junction of High Street and Brickiln Street and also Church Road. Any proposed scheme would be subject to extensive consultation with all affected parties before any works were carried out."
