Sandwell road restrictions are pulled after crusade

Sandwell Council planned to introduce no-waiting at any time restrictions along Causeway, in Rowley Regis, Olga Drive, in Tipton, Newhall Street, in West Bromwich and Station Street, in Cradley Heath.

But the authority decided to abandon the plans following objections from residents who said the measures would only add to problems.

The decision was made by Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services Councillor Ian Jones at a meeting on Friday.

Residents along the Causeway, Rowley Regis, said the change would reduce on-street parking available to them.

They already have difficulty finding spaces due to staff from nearby shops and businesses parking in the road to avoid charges imposed in nearby Blackheath.

A 148-signature petition and three objections were received against the restriction proposed for Olga Drive, in Tipton.

The measure was proposed to address issues of parking around school gates.

But objectors said the resident who had made the request in the first place no longer lived in the street.

And residents said they were happy for parents to park in the road for short periods rather than lose on-street parking for themselves and their visitors.

Three objections were also received for planned restrictions in Newhall Street, West Bromwich, amid concerns it would reduce on street parking for both residents and also for visitors.

It would also have affected those visiting Grace Community Church and Allens Sport and Social Club.

Residents in Station Street, Cradley Heath, said there was simply no parking problem along the street.

Councillor Jones said: "These changes were put forward to deal with issues along these roads in the area.

"However representations have been made from residents and councillors which have convinced me that they should not be proceeded with."

Modifications were also made to proposals along other routes in the area.

Lines will be extended to protect the second entrance to Langley Gardens, in Langley Road, Oldbury.

And yellow lines planned for Taylors Lane, West Bromwich, will be extended to prevent parking at the entrance of a council depot along the route.
