New parking bays, kerbs and flagstone paving are being put in place in Castle Street, Eccleshall. The area has been dogged by problems of cars being parked along there and blocking the route. Temporary traffic lights will be in place while the work is done.

Council chiefs hope it will make the area more accessible. The work includes putting in new parking bays and York stone flags, conservation kerbs and granite.

Frank Chapman, Staffordshire County councillor, said: "We're very keen to develop Castle Street to facilitate the needs of both motorists and pedestrians.

"The current footpath is difficult for pedestrians to access because it is constantly obstructed by parked vehicles.

"By creating parking bays and enhancing the paving, we will make the area more accessible."

Work began on Monday and is taking place outside Selwyn Court residential block. Councillor Gordon Dale, chairman of Eccleshall Parish Council, said it was the latest phase in a wider programme to enhance and preserve the historic town.

"The parish council has for some time wished to enhance the area in front of Selwyn Court to match the High Street and at last, with the partnership of the county and borough councils, the project is going to take place," he said.
