Ten weeks of roadworks were today announced in Coseley for gas mains to be replaced, with drivers being warned that they may face disruption.

Mason Street will be shut between Hospital Lane and the busy Birmingham New Road from Friday.

The closure will be extended during September 15 and 16 to run from Hospital Lane through to the island with Vicarage Road.

Drivers will not be able to access the road from the Birmingham New Road during that weekend.

And from September 17 to October 7, Mason Street will be one way from the Vicarage Road island towards Hospital Lane. This will prevent motorists from turning left off the Birmingham New Road on to Mason Street.

Old gas pipes are being replaced with new plastic ones and Dudley Council insists the work is "essential". Transport councillor Judy Foster said: "These roadworks are taking place to replace gas pipes in order to ensure they are fully functional before the cold winter months."

She added:?"I would like to thank all our road users for their patience while we undertake this work and apologise in advance for any disruption it may cause."

It comes as six weeks of roadworks were starting in Kingswinford today in Stallings Lane – sparking fears businesses will be hit.
