Facebook and Instagram users have reported issues with accessing the social networks.

When attempting to sign on to Facebook on a desktop, the website says the service is down for maintenance.

“Facebook will be back soon,” it reads.

“Facebook is down for required maintenance right now, but you should be able to get back on within a few minutes.

“In the meantime, read more about why you’re seeing this message. Thanks for your patience as we improve the site.”

Users in the UK and other parts of the world turned to rival social network Twitter to announce the downtime from around 4pm on Wednesday, although it’s not clear how wide the issue is.

According to Down Detector, which monitors service outages, people on Instagram are saying they are also unable to send posts or messages.

“We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps,” a Facebook spokesman said.

“We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”
