Facebook simplifies Messenger by putting focus back on conversations
The social network is giving the chat app a tidy up, slimming down the navigation to three tabs.
Facebook has overhauled the look and feel of its Messenger app, with a decluttered navigation putting conversations back at the heart of the app.
Messenger, now in its fourth version, has slimmed down the number of tabs on the main screen from nine to just three, in a bid to simplify the platform.
The app is now broken down into three sections – Chats, for quick access to your existing conversations, People for finding other friends to catch up with alongside Stories, and Discover for connecting to businesses or playing Instant Games.
“We believe Messenger 4 delivers the closeness and authenticity that you’ve been asking for — through simplicity of design and powerful features that put the focus back on messaging and connecting,” Messenger boss Stan Chudnovsky said.
The social network first teased changes to Messenger during its F8 developer conference in May.
Facebook is also introducing new ways to personalise the app, including customisable colour gradients for chat bubbles, as part of a global rollout over the coming weeks.
A dark mode and re-skinned interface that cuts down on the glare from your phone are planned for the app in the near future.
