Could Twitter finally be about to get an edit button?
Make-up YouTuber Jeffree Star got a response from the social media giant after calling for an editing function for tweets.
The prayers of many Twitter users could soon be answered after the social media platform acknowledged a request for an edit button from a prominent YouTuber.
Make-up YouTuber Jeffree Star, who has more than two million followers, tweeted the common complaint that the firm needs to start offering users a way to edit tweets they had already posted.
In a rare acknowledgement, Twitter replied to Star, saying the request had been “noted”.
The feature is one Twitter users have been calling for for years – currently mistakes in tweets either have to be left on the site, or the entire post has to be deleted and then posted again.
Some of the site’s most influential users have lobbied for the introduction of an editing function – Kim Kardashian West revealed earlier this year that she had pushed Twitter boss Jack Dorsey on the matter.
The company has always strongly resisted the calls for the button, and in 2016 then-head of product Kevin Weil argued that the ability to change a tweet had potential issues.
For example, the content of a post that has already gone viral could be edited from harmless content to something controversial, offensive or graphic and be widely circulated before it could be removed.
The public acknowledgement of Star’s tweet, however, has given some hope that Twitter is exploring the idea of introducing the feature, permanently ending the days of typo-filled tweets.
