The latest update to Fortnite – Season 6 – is now live to players, with an apparent Halloween theme at the heart of the collection of new features.

With the tag-line “Darkness Rises”, Season 6 is introducing new areas called the Wailing Woods and the Haunted Castle, alongside a host of new spooky-themed skins.

The update revolves around the mysterious purple cube that appeared during Season 5, before moving around the game and eventually melting into the Loot Lake.

The fallout from that incident is the starting point for the new season.

As with any new season in Fortnite, a new Battle Pass has also been made available, which developer Epic Games says offers more than 100 other new rewards otherwise not available.

Anyone who does buy a Battle Pass will instantly get two new outfits called Calamity and DJ Yonder, and levelling up their Battle Pass will help unlock another new Fortnite addition – pets.

Three new pets, called Bonesy, Scales and Camo, will appear as passive characters alongside players as they move around the map and even react to different situations players find themselves in.

The game is available to play across the Xbox and Nintendo Switch consoles as well as on PC and mobile, while Sony also confirmed it would begin allowing cross-play capabilities for PlayStation users for the first time – enabling those gamers to play across platforms and against those on other systems.

The last major Fortnite update arrived in mid-July with new locations – including a desert outpost, Viking ships, ancient statues and an All-Terrain Kart.
