The new emojis

Apple has announced it will grant iOS users over 60 new emoji characters, including new hair colours, animals and smileys.

The tech company released mock-ups of some of the emojis ahead of World Emoji Day on Tuesday.

The images released by Apple mainly fall into three categories: updated person features, smileys and animals.

The new features for people are intended to allow users to express their looks more accurately. This includes red and grey hair, as well as a bald emoji.

New smileys include a cold face, party face and puppy-dog-eyes face, and extra animals are a kangaroo and magnificent peacock.

The characters are coming to iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac later this year in a free software update, and fall in line with the Unicode 11.0 update which approved 66 new emojis in June.
