Plans launched to develop derelict site in Dudley
A community group has launched plans to transform a derelict site into a place for people to grow food and teach children wildlife conservation.
St Thomas’s Community Association wants to develop land between Lupin Road, Hollyhock Road, Cypress Road and Bunns Lane in Dudley.
The site has remained untouched since at least 1963 and has recently become derelict, overgrown and littered with rubbish.
It led to residents being asked for their thoughts on transforming the site, with an overwhelming number showing support for the plans.
Demand at nearby Jasmine Road Community Gardens for such activities is high.
Donna Haddock, a trustee and project lead at Jasmine Road Community Gardens, said: "We are excited about the plans and pleased to be working with St Thomas’s to transform this site.
"This will be a good addition to the work we do and will be something that is very much needed in the area that involves local people, children, schools and other groups."
Dudley councillor Shaukat Ali, who is chairman of the community group, said: " had this site cleared of lorry loads of fly-tipped items around 15 years ago and a barrier installed to prevent further dumping.
"We have been working closely with Jasmine Road Community Gardens on how to bring this site into use for the benefit of local people.
"Consultation has shown overwhelming support from local people who cannot wait to get involved taking forward these exciting plans.
"People will have an opportunity to grow fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants on their doorstep and create a space for enjoying the natural environment.
"I am delighted that works to clear the site clearance marks a new chapter in the history of this land."
