Business plan drawn up for new Wednesbury health centre
A state-of-the-art health centre and "much-needed" council homes are set to be built in Wednesbury town centre.
Sandwell Council is working with Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group on plans to build a new GP surgery in King Street to replace outdated facilities in the area.
If plans go ahead, the council will also be building a number of two-bed and three-bed houses nearby.
But councillors have decided the area needs a more up-to-date medical practice to serve the community.
A report to the council’s cabinet next week states that under the proposed plans the council will own the new building and lease it to the NHS.
The authority also wants to build some new council homes alongside it – planning permission for four two-bedroom houses and one three-bedroom home has already been given.
The report says that the council plans to seek land remediation grant funding from the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership to prepare the site for re-development.
Councillor Wasim Ali, cabinet member for inclusive economic growth said: "This is an exciting development and we are delighted to work with the NHS on this joint project which will give the people much better health facilities.
“We are also pleased that we have been able to include in the development, plans for five much-needed council homes."
The report will be discussed by the council's cabinet on Wednesday, March 18.
A business plan for the health centre is set to come to cabinet later in the year.
