The outline application for 430 homes and up to 575 sq m of shop space for land, off Fairway, in Littleworth, was given the nod by Stafford Borough Council’s officers yesterday with six votes to three.

St Modwen Developments Ltd submitted the plans more than a year ago, but there have been concerns over how the area will cope with the extra traffic.

Councillor Chris Baron said that nearby schools and GP surgeries were full to capacity - and the area had just lost lost its bus service.

She added that opposition was not to the houses, but due to the impact it could have on the area.

However, supporters of the application have claimed the volume of traffic from the new development would be less than when it was an industrial site previously.

The application previously sought permission for up to 490 homes, but it has since been amended to 430.

Eight objections were submitted to the original applications and further objections were received to the amended application too, for reasons including increase in traffic and concern for the future of mature trees on the site

The council will meet at a later date to discuss the finer points of the application.
