Demolition work starts on former Walsall police station
Demolition work has started at the former Walsall police station which has been called an ‘eyesore’ by councillors.
Diggers from DSM Demolition moved into the site on Green Lane, which closed in 2016, to start the work.
Byron Young, demolition supervisor, said: “It will take eight weeks in total, to get it all cleared.” It comes after councillors for the area called it a ‘magnet for crime’.
Councillor Lee Jeavons, who represents Birchills-Leamore, said: “They’re starting to pull it down starting at the sides, so they’re cracking on with the work. It’s been going on for a few days now. I’m pleased they’ve been getting on with the work. It was a recognisable and iconic building, but it’s not a police station anymore.
“I’m pleased to see it’s moving forward because it’s a magnet for crime and anti-social behaviour there.”
The building was one of 27 stations closed to save money.
