63 council homes set for go-ahead in Sandwell
Scores of council homes will be built on brownfield land in Tipton, with local authority chiefs set to give plans the go-ahead tonight.
Proposals for 63 new affordable homes off Strathmore Road have been recommended for approval by council planners.
Bosses have said building properties on the site will ‘contribute substantially to the wider regeneration of the area’.
The scheme will see 46 two-bed homes, 11 three beds and six four beds built. It is due to be approved by the authority’s planning committee and will then be sent to full council for final sign-off.
Princes End ward councillor Bill Cherrington said the council homes were ‘badly needed’ and would bring a derelict site back into good use.
Councillor Cherrington said: “Building 63 homes there will be great news for the local area, especially as we always need more social housing.
“It is a badly needed development and council homes are always in short supply.
“At the moment that site is being used as a dumping ground – even though it is fenced off rubbish is being thrown over the fence.
“These plans will get that site back into good use. Any homes we can get built at great news and its good to get more social housing built.”
A report for tonight’s council meeting says: “The redevelopment of the site, within a suitable location in a predominantly residential environment of Tipton, would in my opinion contribute substantially to the wider regeneration of the area and would have no significant adverse effects on the amenity of surrounding residents.
“The application is therefore recommended for approval, subject to referral to full council.”
The council-owned site is bordered by Strathmore Road, Kingsbury Road, Sandgate Road, Ridgeway Road and Henn Street
It is described as ‘currently cleared and vacant’.
