Sandwell Council has submitted a planning application to build the new bungalows on land off Oxford Road in West Bromwich.

People with younger families with wheelchair needs could also benefit from the scheme.

The borough's deputy council leader has said the plans are part of the council's commitment to making affordable housing available to local people.

Under the proposals the scheme would see 57 two-bedroom houses, with six of those designed for people with learning difficulties or autism, and two three-bedroom houses for families with a wheelchair user.

Space for 61 cars and storage for 59 bikes is also included in the proposals, for vacant land at the site which used to be occupied by Victorian houses.

A residents' parking scheme could also be brought into force to prevent any problems with commuters parking to use the nearby Dartmouth Metro station. There will also be a landscaped 'village meadow' space, an open village square area and a quieter area for residents to contemplate.

Councillor Mahboob Hussain, the council's cabinet member for town and neighbourhood services, said: "This is part of our commitment to make affordable homes available for local people. Subject to planning permission, we will then work up the finer details of the scheme."
