Walsall Housing Group has secured the cash from the Homes and Communities Agency.

The news was today welcomed by supporters who said it would help address the need for affordable homes in the borough.

New homes will be built at Barracks Lane in Blakenall; Fisher Road in Mossley; Curtin Drive in Moxley, Whateley Road in Ryecroft and Sprout Lane in Caldmore.

The biggest of the sites is Barracks Lane where the housing group is building 73 new affordable homes in partnership with Galliford Try.

Pete Smith, councillor for the Blakenall ward, said: "This is welcome news on all counts.

"The more brownfield sites that are regenerated the better.

"There is a really big housing need, particularly in this area and while we would welcome a mixture of housing, there is a real need for properties at affordable rents."
