Walsall Council will sell land off at £1 in new homes plan
Land earmarked for hundreds of new homes in Walsall will be sold for just £1 to help kickstart its multi-million pound regeneration, it was disclosed today.
Walsall Council is to dispose of the land for a nominal fee to push forward the development of more than 700 properties around the now abandoned Goscote estate.
Walsall Housing Group is drawing up a revised scheme after moves to build on green belt land as part of a swap agreement were scrapped earlier this year.
More than 800 objections were lodged against the loss of The Lea as part of the initial proposals which saw a campaign group established.
Now, moves to scrap building on the green belt and incorporate all of the former Goscote estate will see the amount of council-owned land fall from 37 to 18 per cent.
Members of the decision-making council cabinet are being recommended to support the regeneration plan by selling off the freehold for £1 on Wednesday.
Moves to transform the area have been in the pipeline for several years after it was agreed to pull down existing properties to create a modern estate.
There were hold-ups after one occupier refused to move. The former Goscote estate has stood empty in the meantime and been a target for fly-tippers.
