With a population of around 16,800, the town of Aldridge lies within the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall although it was historically part of the county of Staffordshire.

Recorded as a settlement in the Domesday Book of 1086, it is thought to have taken its name from the abundance of Alder trees in the area.
