All 40 seats will go before voters in Stafford at this year's local elections, with Labour hoping to improve on its six seats to make inroads into the Conservatives dominance of the authority.

This year’s election marks 45 years since local government reform, and the Tories have been in charge for all but 10 years.

It will also be Labour’s first elections under new group leader Aidan Godfrey, who took over from Jack Kemp last year.

Stafford Borough Council currently has 30 Conservative members, six Labour members and four independents.

Conservative candidates have been fielded for all but one of the borough’s 23 wards.

Contesting

Labour are contesting 21 out of 23 wards, with no candidates standing in Swynnerton and Oulton or neighbouring Barlaston.

Ukip put forward candidates in 11 wards, while five wards are being contested by Green Party candidates. There is one Liberal Democrat standing for election and six wards include independent candidates

A number of long-serving councillors are not standing this time around.

They include Joyce Farnham, Brian Price, Margaret Goodall, Frank Finlay and Ken Williamson.

Council leader Patrick Farrington is moving from Baswich to Gnosall and Woodseaves, while the two Swynnerton and Oulton seats will go uncontested to Conservatives Roy James and James Nixon.

Voting takes place on May 2.
