The authority manages seven cemeteries across the borough: Bentley, James Bridge, North Walsall, Ryecroft, Streetly, and Willenhall Lawn Cemetery, and it runs Streetly Crematorium which has two chapels.

The review follows a proposed amendment to the 2025/26 budget by the leader of the independent group to reduce the cost of burial fees across Walsall.

When the budget was presented to all elected members at full council on February 26, councillor Aftab Nawaz moved that burial fees should be reduced by 12.5 percent, and that out-of-hours burial fees to be reduced by 25 percent.

He said: “When someone passes away and you’re so distressed with it, the last thing you want to see is a big bill coming through your door.

“We have been approached by many constituents who are asking us to help in regards to reducing the costs of burials.”

The total cost of the proposed amendment was £212,252, which Nawaz suggested could be paid for by the council’s reserves.

But when it came to the vote on the amendment, 42 were against, 10 were for, and one was against.

Both the council leader, councillor Garry Perry and labour group leader, councillor Matt Ward, both voted against the amendment but agreed changes were needed to the bereavement services.

Portfolio holder for health and wellbeing, councillor Gary Flint, said: “Whilst a sensitive subject for many, we invite all residents to share their views, by participating in this survey.

“We understand that the needs and preferences of those we serve are diverse and evolving and by engaging with our local community, we aim to ensure that the services and products offered meet the highest standards of care and support.

“This consultation will help us identify areas for improvement and innovation, ensuring that we continue to offer a meaningful and respectful service at such a challenging time.”
