MP calls for Queen's Award to honour Covid heroes
Michael Fabricant MP has called for a special Queen's award to recognise community work being done to fight the coronavirus.
The Conservative MP for Lichfield has raised the issue with Boris Johnson, telling the PM that the "deep sense of community spirit" shown during the pandemic deserves State recognition.
Mr Fabricant hailed the work of a number of local volunteers. They include Elaine Hutchings, who set up a distribution hub from her home in Lichfield, producing and sending out more than 2,000 food packages and prescription deliveries to the most vulnerable and to keyworkers.
He also praised Jayne Shardlow, who formed the Lichfield Community Scrubbers, which worked with a national group to produce and distribute nearly 300 sets of medical scrubs for use by the NHS.
Mr Fabricant said: "They do this not for glory, but from a deep sense of community spirit.
"But when this is all over, just like in wartime, acts of selfless giving such as these should be recognised by the State.
"Either with special Queen’s Awards or some other honours. It is the very least we can do – though in the meantime, I give them my deepest thanks."
