Wednesbury North Councillor Elaine Costigan has remembered William Archer, a loving father and hardworking councillor.

In his earlier life, Mr Archer - who was from Wednesbury - served as a solider in the Second World War.

In his later years, he served 36 years as a Conservative councillor in Sandwell, becoming mayor in 2005 for 12 months.

He retired in 2010, aged 83. He died on June 2, 2018, at the age of 93.

Councillor Costigan has kept all his letters - correspondences with past prime ministers and Buckingham Palace - and newspaper cuttings.

She said: "He never stopped writing.

"He loved it when he was the mayor from 2005 to 2006. In that role, he raised over £36,000 for guide dogs for the blind and prostate cancer.

"Dad was loved by the people of Wednesbury, we all miss him so much.

"We have so many things to remember him by - his great baritone singing voice, his sense of humour, his work ethic, and his advice. He adored his family so much."

She added: "He will never be forgotten, especially with the pub in Wednesbury being named after him - The William Archer."
