Dudley councillor Pete Lowe says Labour needs to unite to win in the West Midlands

The Dudley councillor was beaten by Birmingham MP Liam Byrne in the race to secure Labour's nomination to take on Conservative Andy Street at the ballot box in May.

Mr Lowe congratulated his opponent and added: "We as a Labour Party must deliver a mayoralty for the many, which looks after each and every community in our region.

"Now is our time to show that we can rebuild, and we can win back the trust of so many voters in the West Midlands, an electorally vital region for our party. I wish Liam all the best in winning in May, and he’ll have my help and support.

"Whilst my mayoral campaign has finished, I’m looking forward to working on exciting projects to come in the future. Watch this space."

Mr Byrne won the candidacy in a ballot of almost 7,000 members – less than half the number who were eligible to vote.

He has promised to end inequality across the region, and has already revealed plans to address homelessness and climate change.
