Gavin Williamson: Possible cabinet return 'recognition I did nothing wrong'
Gavin Williamson has described reports he has been cleared for a return to the cabinet as "recognition" that he had no involvement in the leak on Huawei from the National Security Council.
The South Staffordshire MP was sacked as Defence Secretary by Theresa May after the finger of blame was pointed at him over the leak on the Chinese mobile giant.
But Mr Williamson could be in line for swift return to the front bench with a new Prime Minister to be named this month.
Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwill has said he would not block a return to Government for Mr Williamson, according to reports.
The former Chief Whip played a key role in helping frontrunner Boris Johnson secure enough votes from Tory MPs to ensure he made the final two in the race to be PM.
There is speculation Mr Williamson could be rewarded with a cabinet position if Mr Johnson makes it into Number 10.
Mr Williamson told the Express & Star he had "not asked for anything" when asked about whether he was hopeful of a return to the cabinet.
He said: "I'm very glad there has been that recognition that I didn't leak from the National Security Council in the first place. That is something I have always been crystal clear on. I'm glad to see Mark Sedwill and others recognising that."
He added: "I have not asked for anything. I am very much enjoying focusing on being a constituency Member of Parliament and I have not had any more thoughts than that."
The South Staffordshire MP strenuously denied involvement in the National Security Council leak after being singled out over information from secret discussions on the UK's 5G network which appeared in the Daily Telegraph.
He then threw his weight behind Mr Johnson after Mrs May announced she was stepping down as Prime Minister.
