Sir Bill joins calls for Government to publish Brexit legal advice
Sir Bill Cash has joined calls for Theresa May to publish the full legal advice behind her Brexit plans.
The Prime Minister is facing demands from the DUP, Labour, Tory backbenchers and her own Cabinet to show the legal advice from Attorney General Geoffrey Cox, which sets out the Government's proposals to the EU, including over the Irish backstop.
Tory Brexiteer and Stone MP Sir Bill, who served as shadow Attorney General under Iain Duncan Smith, said: "The Attorney General's advice on critical constitutional issues is for Parliament and the country, not just for the Government.
"As shadow Attorney General I successfully pressured Blair and the Attorney General to produce legal advice on the Iraq war and it should happen again."
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, chief whip for Mrs May’s DUP allies, led calls for the advice to be published, saying he believed the UK was heading for a 'no deal' Brexit because of the demands the EU and Dublin are making for the Irish backstop.
Shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer said: "It’s essential MPs are given the opportunity to scrutinise the legal advice before voting on the final deal.
"The public have the right to know precisely what the Cabinet has signed up to and what the implications are for the future."
