Who’s calling? Tom Watson hits the airwaves on LBC show
He’s used to tackling Theresa May in parliament, but this week Tom Watson swapped it all for the airwaves.
The West Bromwich East MP stood in for former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, hosting a call-in show for London-based radio station LBC.
He spoke to a number of people across the UK tackling questions on everything from Brexit to his relationship with Jeremy Corbyn.
Joking on Twitter he said it could be a great idea for a new show called ‘Kumbaya with Tom Watson’.
He said: “It was very interesting to work on a national radio station as both a guest and a presenter at the same time.
“Any number of people up and down the UK could call in and in modern politics that can only be a good thing.
"I was a little nervous, especially as there were professional presenters on before and after me, it was daunting but exhilarating.
“I think it was just a one-off and I won’t be doing it again any time soon, but if BBC WM want to give me a weekly show I wouldn’t say no.
“I didn’t know I was stepping in for Nigel Farage, they just asked me if I wanted to do a show and I think they expected me to say no.
“It was very interesting though and let me reflect on a few things and in the modern age this isn’t too common.
“One person asked me if I would press the red button and at first it stumped me.
"There were so many red buttons in the studio I thought he was talking about them, it took me a few seconds to realise he was talking about the nation’s security!
“One of the red buttons said ‘dump’ on it and the other ‘cough’, I kept thinking about pressing one of them.”
