Former Wolverhampton MP gets top new business role
A former Wolverhampton MP has been given a top job promoting business by the Government after failing to win back his seat.
Paul Uppal will take up the new role of small business commissioner – championing enterprises and entrepreneurs.
The 50-year-old will lead a team that will not only help small business grow and thrive, but also help them resolve disputes with larger businesses.
Mr Uppal has 20 years in the property industry and is keen to resolve late payment issues, a problem he experienced first hand.
He said: "Running your own business can be a very lonely experience and my priority will be ensuring small firms feel supported as well as helping to create an overall impression that business isn’t necessarily cut throat.
“In fact, successful businesses are built on integrity, entrepreneurial spirit and trusting relationships and I want to highlight that Britain can be the best place in the world for new entrepreneurs to establish and grow their own businesses.”

I am delighted to announce Paul Uppal as the first small business commissioner. His extensive experience as a small business owner makes him perfectly suited to champion the interests of small business and bring about a change in culture that will create a level playing field for everyone.

Wolves fan Mr Uppal, a father of three, was the Conservative MP for Wolverhampton South West between 2010 and 2015.
He stood in June to win back the seat but was defeated by Labour's Eleanor Smith.
The office of the small business commissioner is expected to open by the end of this year.
