Stafford Borough Council's cabinet agreed that council tax would increase by 1.9 per cent for 2017-18.

Similar increases are likely for 2018-19 and 2019-20.

The increase will see those in the band D category pay an extra 5p a week, which equates to £2.81 a year.

Councillor Kenneth Williamson said: "This will ensure we can provide the same services we do for residents now as a minimum. It will also help us raise more money to invest into Stafford. We want to ensure that our residents get the absolute best out of their money."

Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis has recommended the force's proportion of the council tax be increased by 1.99 per cent.
