POLL: Should David Cameron meet Donald Trump?
David Cameron has no plans to meet Donald Trump during the US presidential hopeful's visit to the UK this week, Downing Street has said.
The billionaire property developer is due to attend the official relaunch of his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland on Friday - the day when the result of the EU referendum will be announced.
A meeting with Mr Trump could have been awkward for the PM, as the presumptive Republican candidate has said that he thinks Britain should leave the EU, telling Fox News in May: "I would say that they're better off without it."
However, an interview with the Hollywood Reporter last week suggested the issue was not foremost in his mind, as he apparently failed to recognise the term "Brexit". When told it referred to UK withdrawal from the EU, he said: "Oh yeah, I think they should leave."
Prime Ministers have previously met presidential candidates if they request a meeting on visits to the UK during presidential campaigns. Mr Cameron welcomed Mitt Romney at Downing Street during the 2012 campaign, when the Republican hopeful slipped up by questioning London's readiness to host the Olympic Games.
The Turnberry hotel and golf course in south-west Scotland opened for guests on Wednesday following a £200 million redevelopment. Mr Trump bought the resort in 2014 for £35 million.
