The cathedral is set to host two events to discuss and debate the upcoming EU referendum over the coming months.

The first event, 'Reimagining Europe', will take place on May 11 at 19.15 and will focus on the ethical and historical factors that have shaped the European Union.

Lord Richard Newby, member of the House of Lords and Liberal Democrat Chief Whip will be taking part in the debate, discussing the broader aims of bringing people together and maintaining peace and freedom in relation to the European Union.

His focus will be on issues underpinning the concepts of equality and freedom of the individual, the influence the EU holds over fair democracy, common standards of working conditions, protection for vulnerable people and more.

The meeting will include a short film produced by 'Christians in Politics' entitled 'Disagreeing Well', and a Q&A session.

The second event, the European Referendum Debate, will take place on June 3 at 7.30pm.

The Dean of Lichfield, Reverend Adrian Dorber will chair a debate by two of Staffordshire's MPs – Tristram Hunt seconded by Paul Ray, and Michael Fabricant seconded by Mike Horridge – on the case for and against Britain remaining within the European Union.

Refreshments will be served in the Cathedral from 19.00 on the evening.

The Reverend said: "These are important occasion to bring the community together and discuss a vital issue which will affect the country in the coming years.

"They will also provide opportunities to hear arguments on both sides, and to challenge our preconceptions.

"All are welcome to join us."

Last year, Lichfield Cathedral successfully played host to two debates surrounding the General Election. This year, two events will be held to discuss and debate the upcoming EU Referendum.
