Ian Thompson, who has been in the role since 2008, will retire after more than 40 years in local government.

Mr Thompson, 63, has been labelled 'a great servant to the public sector' and councillors will start the process of finding his replacement next week.

The chief executive, who is married with two grown-up children, joined the authority in 2005 from Lichfield District Council where he was director of development.

He said: "Leaving a job that I love is not going to be easy and it has been a genuine privilege to work with such committed colleagues, elected members and partners.

"I am proud of what we have achieved in my time at the council."

Mr Thompson will retire in the summer when a new appointment is made.
